Experiencing the Big Easy

Little did I know that when I came to New Orleans that I would tap into another world. Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelt once mused that, “New Orleans makes it possible to go to Europe without ever leaving the United States.” I began my google search of all the things one must see and do when visiting this charming, quaint city and my list grew exponentially!

Ruta Sepetys once claimed that, “New Orleans is unlike any city in America. Its cultural diversity is woven into the food, the music the architecture–even the local superstitions It’s a sensory experience on all levels and there’s a story lurking around every corner.”

I went straight to Viator.com and was instantly flooded with so many things to do. I knew we wouldn’t be able to do it all, but that increases our reasons for returning.

Once we arrived at the airport we took an Uber to our hotel, the Club Wyndham Avenue Plaza on St. Charles Street. https://www.avenueplazaresort.com/

We were blessed with the most knowledgeable Uber driver who was plenty eager to show off his beloved NOLA and extol to us the delights of their many culinary highlights. After we checked in we ventured out to find somewhere to eat and to our great surprise stumbled across Houston’s, which is not for the casual dresser but worth the extra time getting ready! If they can’t make it good, they won’t make it. Everything is homemade, right down to the ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise! https://www.houstons.com/locations/neworleans/#

As is customary when visiting New Orleans a cruise down the Mississippi River is a highlighted must! We were privileged to travel on the mighty Steamboat Natchez. Their website has this disclaimer: “When in New Orleans, there’s no better, more classic way to experience the mighty Mississippi than on a river tour aboard the Steamboat Natchez. The historic stern-wheeled steamboat makes its home on the riverfront next to the French Quarter, and slowly and gracefully plies the river for brunch, lunch, or dinner cruises with live traditional jazz on board.”

One of the most powerful places we visited
