Venice, Italy

Just mentioning a visit to Italy can conjure up a bevy of emotions as well as long lists of places to visit but before going to this European classic it’s important to do a bit of research.

Most people have Rome and Venice on their bucket lists as THE places to visit. I’ve careened through the wavy and undulating canals of Venice and have been surprised by my discoveries on every turn and twist.

It’s one of the most romantic and relaxing getaways I’ve been on with my husband. As I continue to stay abreast of things to do there it hasn’t escaped my attention that visitors to Venice will now have to pay a minimal fee to enter the city. https://www.afar.com/magazine/venice-to-start-charging-tourists-to-enter-the-city-in-2022?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=012122%20VeniceLasVegas&utm_term=Daily%20Wander%20%28Have%20opened%20newsletter%20before%29

Along with the sacred stroll through St Mark’s Basilica, a stop at the Doges Palace, a scenic gondola ride, and the massive Rialto bridge, I’ve added three islands to visit that are fairly unknown but definitely worth the trip!

Murano provides one with the chance to see master glass blowers at work. After their demonstration browse the shops to see their colorful artwork on display, which includes everything from miniature items to display on a shelf to masterfully crafted chandeliers that capture the light and dance with colorful displays on the walls.

Burano is colorful in its own right with the most delightfully displayed painted homes I’ve ever witnessed. While walking through the town we discovered so many beautiful lace tablecloths, blankets, and everything else you can imagine here, We even purchased some beautiful lace Christmas ornaments that don our tree every December.

Byzantine churches are everywhere in Torcello, with the most famous one being the Church of Santa Fosca. While many of the paintings inside the church are fading for whatever reason, it’s sure a sight to behold!

Once back in Venice make sure to watch your step! There are many artists out and about throughout the town and their paintings are carefully placed on the ground for an unsuspecting guest to step on. Once you’ve made the mistake of stepping on it, you will be told you have to purchase it so make sure to watch your step unless you absolutely love the painting. We did purchase two of them that are currently on display in our home right now and we love them! The shops along the way are really worth the effort, time, and money! Some of the best souvenirs you can get are located at these artists’ kiosks.
